Surrendering Your Pet
There are unfortunate times where you may find yourself in a situation that you feel you may need to surrender your pet. If you are faced with this, please give us a call 408.420.7233 or send us an email.
Sometimes, it's just a matter of speaking to someone to get advice/tips/suggestions and you may find that you don't even need to part ways with your best friend.

Guardian Adoption Program
We also have a program to help you rehome your pet, called the Guardian Adoption Program. Click here to learn more about GAP.

Stray Cat/Kitten (help with trapping, SHAS to take in and foster)

If you found a cat or kitten in your area, contact Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary and see if they can take in the animal 408.420.7233 or send us an email . Unfortunately there will be times when Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary does not have the resources to take in additional animals; when that occurs, please try contacting other local NO-KILL rescue groups click here.

Finding A New Home On Your Own

Please note: Never offer an animal "Free To A Good Home." All lives have value; charge a nominal fee or ask for a donation to be made to a local charity. Click here to learn more or contact SHAS for more information.

If You Need Help Trapping (Trap/Neuter/Release) Cats/Kittens In Your Neighborhood:

FIV/FELV/FIP: Get The Facts

  • FIV: Catching a Bad Case of Rumors (from Best Friends)
  • FIV Fact Sheet .pdf (from Best Friends)
  • FIV Facts (from Best Friends)
    1. The Feline Immunodeficiency Virus is a slow virus that affects a cat's immune system over a period of years.
    2. FIV is a cat-only disease and cannot be spread to humans or other non-felines.
    3. FIV cats most often live long, healthy, and relatively normal lives with no symptoms at all.
    4. FIV is not easily passed between cats. It cannot be spread casually - like in litter boxes, water and food bowls, or when snuggling and playing. It is rarely spread from a mother to her kittens.
    5. The virus can be spread through blood transfusions, badly infected gums, or serious, penetrating bite wounds. (Bite wounds of this kind are extremely rare, except in free-roaming, unneutered tomcats.)
    6. A neutered cat, in a home, is extremely unlikely to infect other cats, if properly introduced.
    7. Many vets are not educated about FIV since the virus was only discovered 15 years ago.
    8. FIV-positive cats should be kept as healthy as possible. Keep them indoors and free from stress, feed them a high-quality diet, keep and treat any secondary problems as soon as they arise.
